Going into Monday night’s fixture between Celta Vigo and Cádiz, both teams lingered around the bottom of the table, hoping to secure their first win since September 1. Celta have not struggled to create chances this season, but their league position is a result of an inability to finish. Their star striker, Iago Aspas, has scored just once in eight months, and the rest of the team is doing little to help with the team’s goalscoring problems. Cádiz have equally had trouble finding the back of the net, scoring a league-low of just 11 goals so far this season. The game hardly promised to be a goal fest.
Cádiz goalkeeper David Gil was the hero of the night as Celta were unable to take full advantage of their extra man, as their goal-scoring problems were once again their downfall. The away side went ahead early thanks to a Chris Ramos goal following a fantastic Iván Alejo cross and an impressive header. Celta immediately went on the attack, and Gil twice had to come to the rescue to maintain Cádiz’s lead, however, around the half-hour mark, the away side went down to 10 men after Victor Chust received a harsh red card for dragging down Aspas as he ran through on goal. It was very debatable as to whether Chust was the last man as it looked as though Fali may have come to the rescue. VAR, however, decided to maintain the sending-off. From that moment, Cádiz attempted to hold onto their slender lead at Balaídos.
David Gil came to the rescue on many occasions, but the Galician side eventually found their goal through Jørgen Strand Larsen. Despite their best efforts, the home side were unable to find a second as Gil continued to impress. The game ultimately finished in a stalemate. Celta remain in the relegation zone on nine points, two points behind Mallorca in 17th, while Cádiz move up one spot to 16th.
