As Celtic head towards the business end of the season, they have been handed a major worry. Kasper Schmeichel suffered an injury while representing the Denmark national team against Portugal. On top of that, he ended up playing with it as his side had used all their substitutes by that point.
Following the game, Schmeichel had to be taken to the hospital. And while he deserves a lot of credit for playing with an injury for his national team, naturally, Celtic fans have been left worried about his situation and are wondering how long he will be out for.
We still do not have the answer to that question. But it is for certain that he has been injured and it looks like he will be out for the foreseeable future.
Schmeichel has been Celtic's number one option between the posts since arriving in the summer. So, if he has to spend any significant length of time on the sidelines, it will be a blow for Brendan Rodgers' side. Unfortunately, there is a worrying update on his situation.
The Denmark national team manager's recent comments won't fill Celtic fans will confidence when it comes to Schmeichel's situation. Brian Riemer told TV 2 Sport:
"The status is that Kasper is injured. And right now we are doing the in-depth studies, which should provide an indication of whether we are talking about a shorter, medium or long injury period. I don't think there is any doubt that he will not play this weekend."
Riemer further went on to add that Schmeichel will be injured for the foreseeable future as he said:
"He has recovered quickly from injuries before. I know he is also keen on that in this case, but he is injured, and he will be for the foreseeable future."
This is not what Celtic needed at this point in the season. Not only do they need to get over the finish line in the Premiership title race but they also have to win the Scottish Cup as well, if they want to complete another domestic treble.
If Schmeichel does remain out for the rest of the season, or any significant amount of time, then the Hoops will have two options to choose from. First, they can go with summer signing Viljami Sinisalo, who was brought in from Aston Villa and has made just one appearance so far. Second, they can go with the more experienced Scott Bain, although he has not played a single game for the Hoops in the 24/25 campaign.
