Celtic face Young Boys on Wednesday evening on Matchday Seven of the UEFA Champions League. The Scottish Champions know that three points against the visitors from Switzerland will almost certainly ensure their progression into the next round of the competition. The opponents, who sit bottom of the UCL table, are already out of the competition and are playing for pride as they look to inspire a response to their poor season so far.
Brendan has spoken this week about the club continuing its European journey with a reflection on the successes of the past. This is the moment for his team to make their own history in Europe and seal a place into the next phase of the new-look competition.
The Celtic manager confirmed that there were no fresh injury concerns and just James Forrest remained out. The veteran winger is not expected back until February. The team largely picks itself but there are a couple of areas of the pitch in which the manager will have to decide – namely in the midfield.
Kasper Schmeichel will start in goals. After conceding 7 goals and facing 13 shots against Dortmund, Celtic have conceded just twice despite facing 14 goals in the last four games, which is testament to the quality of the Danish goalkeeper.
Austin Trusty continued in the team after a poor display at Dens Park and showed his qualities in the win over Kilmarnock. The USA Internationalist will partner his countryman Cameron Carter-Vickers in the heart of the defence. Alistair Johnston will start at right back and Greg Taylor at left back.
The big call for Brendan comes in the middle of the park – who starts alongside Callum McGregor. There will be notable mentions for Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo but you cannot see beyond Reo Hatate and Arne Engels, especially given the balance that the pair bring.
In attack, Kyogo will start through the middle with the preferred wide options of Daizen Maeda and Nicolas Kühn starting.
Predicted XI: Schmeichel; Taylor, Trusty, Carter-Vickers, Johnston; McGregor, Hatate, Engels; Maeda, Kyogo, Kühn.
The game kicks off at 8pm (Celtic Park Time).
Norwegian referee Rohit Saggi has been handed the whistle by UEFA. The 32-year-old has only taken charge of two UCL games this season but he will be the man in the middle this evening. Saggi will be assisted by countrymen Anders Olav Dale and Morten Jensen with Krisoffter Hagenes acting as Fourth Official.
On VAR, UEFA have confirmed Italian referee Marco Di Bello. Di Bello will be assisted by Benjamin Brand of Germany.
The game will be live on TNT Sports 3 with coverage starting at 7pm. The game will also be available on Discovery+ with the coverage at Celtic Park over the last few games coming from ex-Celts, such as Joe Hart and Neil Lennon.
Come on Celtic!
