FLW's Charlton Athletic fan pundit has identified two key summer transfer priorities
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Charlton Athletic are in the mix for promotion to the Championship under Nathan Jones.
The Addicks are one of the in-form sides in League One, and will be hoping to at least secure a play-off place in the final weeks of the regular campaign.
But their hopes of a top two finish are also still alive, as we approach the final nine league fixtures.
However, the London outfit will also have one eye on the summer transfer window, regardless of where their league status lies going into the upcoming market.
When asked what her one realistic wish for the summer window is, FLW’s Charlton fan pundit Emma Harknett suggested the addition of a new goalkeeper.
She has identified Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle as a potential option, claiming someone with a better all round game and more experience is needed.
“For me, I think it’s one that we probably wanted this summer, and we actually didn’t get, which was a new goalkeeper,” Harknett told Football League World.
“Obviously, we signed Will Mannion, I believe, but he came in more as a number two and obviously Ashley Maynard-Brewer has now picked up an injury.
“And Will has still been great, but I think if we’re looking for promotion to the Championship, we have to go for a better all round and more experienced keeper, maybe at this level.
“Just to pull a name out, as has been mentioned to me by other fans, like a Sam Tickle at Wigan.
“I think he’s got one of the best clean sheet rates in this division, he’s very experienced, good keeper, and he would be one that I know me and a few of my friends would be really looking to get on board.”
Harknett has also urged the club to tie down some of their younger players to longer-term contracts, such as Tyrese Campbell and Thierry Small, among others.
“And obviously, I think a keeper would probably be my main target and the other important thing is I think we need to make sure we tie down our young players,” she added.
“As well as maybe signing, I think it’s just as important to sign down our younger players on long-term contracts, like Tyrese Campbell, Thierry Small still hasn’t signed and we’d like him to stay.
“Kayne Ramsay, obviously get Miles [Leaburn] to stay on a longer contract, and I think that is equally just as important as a new signing.
“But I think goalkeeper should be our number one target, and we need to go for a really good experienced one, at this level.”
Charlton are currently fourth in the League One table, five points adrift of Wrexham in second.
Charlton’s recent run of form has given supporters hope that promotion could be on the cards this season.
If that is achieved under Jones then it will likely be a very busy summer for the club, as they’d want a team capable of actually competing in the Championship.
A new goalkeeper will be at the top of their list regardless of their league status, and new contracts for younger players would also be smart business.
