Chelsea damaging their own player’s career with constant indecision – and it could get worse

Chelsea’s handling of Trevoh Chalobah’s career continues to go from bad to worse.

Early on they sent him off on a few loans, only to find he was perhaps better than expected. They looked set to sell him anyway, but a few injuries gave him an unexpected chance to break into Thomas Tuchel’s team, and he took it. 18 months later he got a new contract.

But rather than be delighted about the humble, homegrown, committed talent they’d discovered and signed, the club never seemed convinced. Six months after than contract, two summers ago, they tried to sell him again, only for an injury to kill off any chances of him moving that summer. When he returned midway through last season, he was great, and was our best central defender in the second half of the campaign.

Surely at that point he would be rewarded with some faith by the club who had twice overlooked his ability? No. Instead he was sent to train with the bomb squad all summer, and eventually packed off to Crystal Palace on loan.

Chelsea continue to disrupt Chalobah’s career from a distance

Finally he’s at a club where he feels valued and wanted – but it seems Chelsea are trying to mess that up too. This week we’ve threatened to cancel his loan and bring him back, which led to him missing out on an FA Cup game for Palace against Stockport last weekend.

Of course we’d love to have Trevoh back – we never would have had him leave in the first place. But messing him and his career around like this because we can’t make up our minds has got to end. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if a young player who wanted nothing more than to play for Chelsea now wants nothing to do with Chelsea.
