Chelsea forward Sam Kerr has become the all-time record goalscorer for Australia after netting five goals against Indonesia in an 18-0 victory in Mumbai this morning in the nation’s opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 group match.

Kerr went into the match sitting on 49 goals, one short of Tim Cahill’s record for Australia. The Chelsea forward netted twice in the opening 11 minutes against Indonesia as she claimed the title of Australia’s all-time top goalscorer at international level. The 28-year-old followed up her early double with three more goals as she moved onto 54 goals for The Commonwealth Bank Matildas.

Australia are the red hot favourites to qualify for the knockout stages of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 given the fact that they are the top ranked side in a group which contains Indonesia, The Philippines and Thailand. Tony Gustavsson’s side got off to a dream start by demolishing an Indonesian side who are ranked 94th in the world.

While Kerr netted five goals, Manchester City’s Hayley Raso and Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyah Simon scored braces while Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord was also on target. Emily van Egmond (four), Ellie Carpenter (two), Mary Fowler and Aivi Luik scored the other goals for Gustavsson’s side.

Australia will contest their second group match against The Philippines in Mumbai on Monday.
