Chelsea star Reece James made his mark after nearly three years away from international duty as England continued their excellent start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Three Lions got the ball rolling on their qualifier campaign with a 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley Stadium before following that up by easing past Baltic minnows Latvia with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
After a rocky start, where England struggled to break down Latvia, the Three Lions needed something special to unlock the opposition backline, and James duly delivered.
Marking his first appearance for England since September 2022, the Chelsea skipper curled home a spectacular free kick that left the Latvia shot-stopper rooted to the spot.
His 38th-minute strike was also his first for England, and it set Thomas Tuchel’s side on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win.
Aside from his picture-perfect goal, James was outstanding for England on both sides of the ball and certainly reminded everyone of his world-class quality.
The 25-year-old was heavily involved for England, recording 118 touches.
He had a near-perfect passing record, completing 96/97, with 18 of those going into the final third. He also completed two crosses and created a chance.
James was equally impressive on the other side of the ball, winning possession eight times. He also won two duels and made two crucial interceptions.
Despite featuring more as a central midfielder for his club side this season, James reminded Enzo Maresca why he’s better off as a right back, where he has thrived throughout his career.
Playing in midfield might be a better way to manage his recurring injury issues, but no one can argue that James is more effective as a right-back.
Chelsea will breathe a sigh of relief that he has come through the international break unscathed, and Maresca will hope he can stay fit for the nine-game Premier League run-in.
The Blues are locked in an astonishing seven-way race for Champions League qualification and will need all the firepower they can muster to get over the line.
