Lazio president Claudio Lotito brags about his club’s balanced financials while firing shots at some of his Serie A rivals.

The Background

As he often likes to remind us, the 67-year-old bought the Italian capital side in 2004 when the club was on the brink of bankruptcy. So while a large section of the fanbase accuses him of being too stingy, Lotito takes great pride in Lazio’s current financial status, reiterating how the club managed to settle its debts and is now a self-sufficient company.

Claudio Lotito Claims Serie A clubs Don’t Have Registration Requirements

On the contrary, the Italian lawyer isn’t impressed with how some of the other Serie A clubs are being run, with owners often having to step in and cover the losses, or simply accumulate large debts. Hence, during his appearance as a guest lecturer at Luiss Sports Association, he insisted that some clubs shouldn’t have been allowed registration in Serie A (via La Lazio Siamo Noi).

All these companies, which keep spending, are supported by funds, but they do not have an economic balance. Many teams today that play in Serie A did not have the requirements to register in the league. But how do you exclude certain famous clubs? It takes courage and not everyone has it. I have been president for 19 years and I have never even received a salary. Then Consob forced me so I had to put it on. I do not have a receipt that was issued by Lazio, nor a car or a driver.

The Clubs Targeted by Claudio Lotito

Lotito was likely aiming this jab at the likes of Juventus, Roma, AC Milan and Inter Milan who have been under great scrutiny in recent years due to their shaky finances. Some of these clubs have been heavily dependent on cash injections from the ownership, as illustrated by the table below.

The Biancocelesti patron insists Italian football needs more presidents who have a real passion for the sport, while taking credit for the introduction of goal-line technology.

We need more presidents who love football, who have a rational passion. The fan is passionate, he doesn’t think with his head but with his heart. The president must think with his head before his heart. I am a president-fan, I’ve always said so. I have made many reforms that have brought great benefits, such as goal-line Technology. I invented it, now there is no more controversy. I fought a war alongside Tavecchio in the federal council for VAR. Nobody wanted it, but I conceived it as a third factor, and not as a form of control.

From Claudio to Enrico Lotito

Lotito then revealed his intention to pass on the club’s ownership and presidency to his son, Enrico, who currently serves as academy manager.

I am not a praised president, but I am the longest-serving, twenty years. Then I have always told everyone that I will leave the company to my son. I intend to preserve it, maintain it and pass it on.
