AC Milan and AS Roma are interested in hiring Giovanni Sartori as their new sporting director, a report claims, but Bologna want to keep him.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Sartori is sought after because of the body of work he has built in over 32 years as a director. He built the Chievo phenomenon, taking them almost to a Champions League spot, then he created the foundations of the Atalanta miracle.

Since 2022 he has dispensed his knowledge to Joey Saputo’s Bologna, who today would like to keep him after the historic qualification for the Champions League themselves. Yet, the signature on the renewal of his expiring contract has not yet arrived.

Sartori is happy at Bologna where he enjoys absolute powers within the limits of the budget he shares with Claudio Fenucci, but at almost 68 years of age he is also understandably studying other possibilities for his career.

Milan and Roma are looking at the idea of trying to hire him and there has already been some contact, even direct, more than anything to understand the margins of a possible agreement. He listened to the proposals ‘with pride’.

The Rossoneri are an attractive project but also there is some added sentimentality, given began his career as a player there in the youth sector. The Giallorossi intrigue him because the owners are willing to invest and there is a multi-year plan in place to relaunch the club.

Both clubs have American ownership and have changed coaches this season so they are going through a very delicate transition. Meanwhile, the current directors Geoffrey Moncada and Florent Ghisolfi are under evaluation, with a view to a ‘profound internal restructuring’.

We wrote a feature recently about Moncada’s past, present and future at Milan given that his contract is expiring, while it is possible that Sartori could work alongside him given that the previous sporting director Antonio D’Ottavio was sacked a few weeks ago.
