Liverpool are at the risk of losing vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Liverpool have been in talks with Alexander-Arnold’s representatives virtually throughout the season, which might explain why he has been dragging his feet over signing a new deal.
Over the past few weeks, Alexander-Arnold has been dropping subtle hints about what the future might hold, giving fans a reason to believe he would extend his stay beyond this summer.
However, Madrid have refused to throw in the towel in the race to land the ‘unbelievable‘ defender.
They see him as a long-term successor to Daniel Carvajal, who is entering the twilight of his illustrious career and is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Carvajal’s understudy and compatriot Lucas Vasquez has also struggled to step up, reinforcing Madrid’s determination to sign Alexander-Arnold.
Los Blancos submitted an offer to Liverpool in the January transfer window, but it was rebuffed, with the Reds preferring to take their chances on losing him for free at the end of the season.
In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool are also determined to keep talisman Mohamed Salah and skipper Virgil van Dijk, and Ornstein reckons they have a better chance of retaining the services of the latter duo.
“Talks continue and there has long been optimism around Anfield in regard to Salah and Van Dijk,” Ornstein said (via The Athletic).
“I’m not aware of agreements being reached, but both players seem keen to stay and are playing out of their skin.
“Plus, as far as we know, Liverpool absolutely want to keep both.
“As they do Alexander-Arnold, but we all know his situation is different – he is younger and has Real Madrid knocking at his door.
“The consensus around the industry is that maybe Salah and Van Dijk will renew, while perhaps Alexander-Arnold will go. But nothing appears to be set in stone yet.”
