While FC Barcelona ultimately made no changes to their squad in the last winter transfer window, the month of January was still a pivotal one for the Blaugranes as they successfully completed several operations.
Most of these operations were for the renewal of some key players whose contracts were expiring in less than two years, i.e., Ronald Araujo, Pedri, and Gavi. The young defender Gerard Martin was also renewed.
Now, reports coming from the Catalan club suggest that there are several other renewals in line, and as Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Barcelona Sporting Director Deco himself was asked about the renewals of some more key individuals.
One such player whose potential new contract is exciting a lot of Blaugrana fans is Lamine Yamal, and Deco reassured that there were not going to be any problems in this operation:
“There are key players, and he is one of them. There’s no debate, no price tag. There haven’t been any offers because we haven’t even wanted to discuss it. He will surely be at Barça for many years, just like Pedri and Gavi. As long as things are handled well, they will stay here.”
“Lamine Yamal is one of the special ones. He doesn’t just have talent—he also has a unique mental strength. The club must do its part, and he will be here for many years.”
Lewandowski, who would have gotten an automatic one-year extension if he had played 55% of games for Barcelona this season, has also reportedly reached an agreement for a new one-year contract, although it has not officially been announced by the Catalan club yet. Deco also commented on his renewal:
“He is so important to us that he can only stay here if he is happy… Maybe tomorrow he has a change of heart and changes his mind—that’s something you should ask him. He feels comfortable here, as does his family, and he has plans here. He is one of the best professionals I have ever seen and one of the best forwards.”
On the other hand, the Portuguese official was not that clear on the question of Flick’s renewal:
“I understand the excitement over the results. But we need to try to be more reasonable. If everything continues like this, and we are happy with him and he is comfortable as well, the path will be set for him to stay for many years.”
One can argue that the German coach already deserves a new contract with the way the team has played this season. However, Deco’s response was also reasonable as the business end of the season is yet to arrive, and it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be able to get another major trophy into their cabinet at the end of the season.
