Tottenham Hotspur have added Djed Spence and new signings Mathys Tel, and Kevin Danso to their Europa League squads for the rest of the season, with Timo Werner, Radu Drăgușin and Fraser Forster left out.
Spence was a surprise exclusion in Spurs’ initial squad at the beginning of the campaign, but has been a pivotal member of Ange Postecoglou’s side in recent months. Since his first Premier League start in a 5-0 win against Southampton in December, the 24-year-old full-back has started in all seven league games (bar his suspension versus Wolves), standing out as an unexpected shining light in a struggling Spurs side.
As for Tel and Danso, the former signed on a six-month loan from Bayern Munich with a €10m fee and €55m option-to-buy clause on the winter transfer window’s deadline day, whilst the latter will also be on loan from Lens until the end of the season, before cementing a transfer as part of Spurs’ £20.9m obligation-to-buy.
Both men made their Spurs debut’s in a 4-0 loss away at Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final last night, but will likely be key members of The Lilywhites’ injury-ravaged squad for the rest of the campaign.
On the exclusions however, Forster made four Europa League starts as a back-up to the injured Guiglelmo Vicario, but has been replaced by academy graduate Brandon Austin in the prior to European fixtures, while Vicario is set to return in time for the knockout fixtures.
Moreover, Drăgușin recently ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and will be out for the rest of the campaign, and, despite making 25 appearances in all competitions so far, Werner has also suffered with injury and produced underwhelming performances with just four goal contributions when he has featured.
Other winter signing Antonín Kinský – who has started all available games following his €16.5m arrival from Slavia Prague – also misses out on the squad. Spurs are unable to register the 21-year-old due to UEFA’s rules restricting clubs to a maximum of three changes in their second squads.
Having secured a fourth place finish in the new Europa League format, the North London side will not have to partake in the round of 32, but know they will face one of AZ Alkmaar, Real Sociedad, Midtjylland, or Galatasaray in the round of 16 – the same potential four opponents of Manchester United.
Those fixtures will be decided in a further draw on February 21, with the first leg to be played away on the 6 March, and the second a week later on 13 March at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
