The biggest moment of the season needed a player with ice running through his veins - step up Dominic Solanke with the penalty to silence the Eintracht Frankfurt crowd and take us into the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
The striker took responsibility from 12 yards after James Maddison had been flattened by home goalkeeper Kaua Santos two minutes before half-time. Stepping up, he paused his run, waited for Santos to move and slotted the ball down the middle of the goal.
That was it. The moment. The goal that saw us home 1-0 on the night at Deutsche Bank Park and 2-1 on aggregate against the team sitting third in the Bundesliga to set up a semi-final over two legs against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt – home on 1 May, away on 8 May (both 8pm UK).
“I was just trying to stay cool, really,” said Dominic, explaining his emotions and mindset as he put the ball down in front of the ultras in the home end. “Their fans were making as much noise as possible. It's quite loud. I just need to stay cold in that moment.”
“I think with everything that’s gone on this season, tonight was huge for everyone at the club, the fans… we knew it was going to be tough, but we’re excited to play in matches like this and to get the job done, we’re delighted.”
“I think that's the thing, a lot of people will probably neglect the fact that we've missed so many players throughout this season and, yes, when we we’re together, we know that we can beat anyone. This competition, it’s something that, from the start of the season, we’re back in Europe and we’ve had our eyes on winning. Now, we’re a step closer.”
“Yes, 100%, especially the fans who travelled, but not only them, the ones at home also supporting us as well. We’ve had some tough times this season, but nights like this hopefully repay that and if we can go on to win it, I’m sure everyone will be happy.”
“We need to cherish these moments. We’ve stuck together all season and this shows that, really. To be together now, it will be a happy journey back, as well!"
