Dumfries Addresses Long Negotiation Before His Renewal

Denzel Dumfries has commented on his recent contract extension, which seemingly took forever but had a positive outcome. The fullback obtained the pay bump he was looking for, but there’s no release clause in it. Instead, Inter will have the option to rescind it one year before its conclusion by paying a small penalty, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs (via Tuttomercatoweb).

The fullback dished to Ziggo Sport (via Calciomercato).

“It took a long time. Naturally, we had to wait for the new ownership to be in charge. We negotiated at length, but I’m proud and happy about the result. It wasn’t easy for them and me. The situation made things hard, and the talks lasted longer than usual. In the end, without beating it around the bush, it was also a matter of money. I’m 28, and this is an important moment for me. The team has always been good to me. Ultimately, we are both very satisfied. I’m having a lot of fun. My intention is to stay until 2028.”

Dumfries was quizzed about witnessing the Edoardo Bove incident first-hand.

“It was an enormous shock. We were all debating whether the ball was inbound or not on my cross, as we had scored, and we saw him collapse suddenly. I realized the situation right away, and everybody responded quickly.”

Dumfries has bonded with his crosstown rival Tijjani Reijnders.

“We have a good relationship. We have kids of the same age, so they play together sometimes. However, we don’t see each other often because we share the stadium, so our schedules are really incompatible. But he always knows where to find us.”
