Ellen White releases memoir with EE to help fight online hate | OneFootball

Former Manchester City and England forward Ellen White has released her memoir ‘UNFINISHED’ in collaboration with EE. The incomplete autobiography was created to raise awareness of the harmful impact of online hate received by girls.

This recent initiative builds upon EE’s ongoing efforts to foster a more secure digital environment for everyone. In the past, EE Hope United collaborated closely with the government to enhance online safety, aiming to establish the UK as the global leader in online safety.

A recent YouGov survey commissioned by EE found that 121 girls aged 13-19 in the UK give up on their journey in sport daily, with online hate playing a key part. The survey also revealed that 44 percent of girls in sports have been subjected to online hate.

White’s first autobiography travels back to her early footballing journey, including playing for Arsenal’s academy and attending England U17 training camps. The book details an alternative reality where White’s career is cut short, with the striker never reaching her potential after giving up football due to hate received on social media.

In reality, White enjoyed a glittering career for both club and country. The 34-year-old won two Women’s Super League titles and three FA Cups during her time at Arsenal and Man City. She was also part of the historic Euro 2022-winning Lionesses side and is their all-time top goalscorer.

While White’s career did see her become one of England’s greatest stars, many young girls will sadly miss out on their dreams due to online abuse.

Tackling online abuse

“Online hate isn’t just words on a screen, it breaks and stifles potential,” White said. “Through my own story, I hope to shed light on the impact of cyberbullying and empower girls so they never stop doing what they love.”

EE have partnered with Glitch, a UK charity dedicated to combatting online abuse and promoting digital citizenship. Together, they have advocated for the inclusion of specific legislation for women and girls within the Online Safety Act.
