Don Goodman believes that a move for Tom Lawrence on a free transfer to the Clarets wouldn't make much sense
Tom Lawrence has spent the last three seasons at Rangers following his departure from Derby County, and an upturn in form, as well as an expiring contract, may see him move back to England in the summer.
The Daily Mail reported that a whole host of top-end Championship clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City, West Brom and Middlesbrough could be interested in bringing him back to the second tier, as well as League One promotion challengers Wrexham, where Lawrence was born.
Additionally, promotion challenging Burnley have been touted as a potential suitor for Tom Lawrence, who made over 250 Championship appearances and played in two separate play-off campaigns before he moved to Ibrox in 2022.
Despite finding his feet in front of goal this season though, his stats make for rather poor viewing at the Scottish giants, and former West Brom and Wolves forward and now EFL pundit, Don Goodman, feels that a move to Turf Moor wouldn't add much other than experience.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, EFL pundit Don Goodman was asked about whether Tom Lawrence would bring much on the field to a Burnley side who are challenging at the top end of the Championship.
He said: "He's been at Rangers for coming up to three seasons [and] it hasn't gone as well as I feel Tom or Rangers will have wanted. He's really struggled for game time certainly since the beginning of the year."
Goodman questioned what Lawrence would bring to the table at Burnley besides experience - which the former West Brom forward feels isn't something the Clarets should be calling out for.
"What would he add to Burnley at 31, other than experience? They've probably got enough of that already," he continued.
"It's not really a move that, with respect, would make a lot of sense to me."
With Burnley being the form side over the last eight games in the Championship, and having not lost a league game in over five months, Scott Parker's side looks primed and ready to make a late surge into the Championship's top two.
If they were to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, they'll most definitely need to upgrade their front line, which at times has been criticised for being too toothless in front of goal this season.
The loan signing of Marcus Edwards has seen goals begin to go in more regularly at Turf Moor and, if his presence helps Burnley secure automatic promotion, it should likely be him that the Clarets look at signing, rather than a 31-year-old with just four Premier League appearances in his career. If they're looking for experience - Lawrence doesn't even provide that if Burnley were to get promoted.
And, with the likes of Ashley Barnes and Nathan Redmond currently on the books, Scott Parker shouldn't be crying out for any experience in the attacking areas next season, regardless of what division they find themselves in, if one or both choose to stick around at Turf Moor.
