Noel Whelan has been left raving over Leeds United youngster Charlie Allen after his performance in the EFL Trophy against Accrington Stanley.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker, who was in attendance at the Wham Stadium on Tuesday evening, revealed the Whites’ new arrival was a standout talent for Mark Jackson’s side.

The 16-year-old attacking midfielder, who signed from Linfield earlier this summer, started and played the full 90 minutes in their 7-0 defeat against a senior Stanley side.

Despite the result, Whelan insists that Allen caught the eye and admits he looks like a very exciting prospect for the future at Elland Road.

“He’s got fantastic ability, you could see that,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“For a 16-year-old boy you can see glimpses in his control and his touch and his decision making that stands out probably more than most 16-year-old players that you have in the game at this present time.

“It’s a great experience for him to get out there and showcase his skills and there’s going to be more to come from him, he’s definitely going to be a good signing for the future.”

Allen made his senior debut for Linfield at just 15-years-old to become the club’s youngest ever debutant.

He made a total of four first-team appearances for the Northern Irish outfit before joining Leeds, while he has also featured for his country’s under-17s side.
