Bruno Fernandes has said Manchester United must shake their ‘fear’ in possession as the club look to turn around a difficult season.

United were beaten by Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, the club’s 10th league defeat of a torrid campaign.

Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter earned the Seagulls a 3-1 win at Old Trafford, a result that leaves the beaten hosts mired in the bottom half.

It’s been a tough start for new head coach Ruben Amorim, who has won just three league games since his arrival in November. The deflating defeat ended a run of recent improvement from the Red Devils.

Fernandes discussed his side’s struggles at full-time and the Manchester United captain has insisted the side must show more bravery on the ball. He criticised his teammates for lacking aggression and taking the safe route in possession too often.

“We can’t concede goals so easily. We need to be more aggressive on the ball because this is the Premier League and the quality is so high,” Fernandes said speaking to BBC Match of the Day.

“You have to be high intensity all the time. We need to be braver on the ball in the final third and between the lines. I need to keep the ball more between the lines and then play from there.

“We can’t end up all the time with the ball at our goalkeeper like we do all the time. I believe that it’s confidence and bravery to do the right things.

“Don’t have fear of doing mistakes, that’s part of football. We have to be brave to do it again and again. It doesn’t matter how much pressure is on you or how difficult it is to play for Manchester United.”
