A one-time member of the attacking ranks at Barcelona has on Wednesday revealed his take that the Blaugrana, alongside Real Madrid, continue to represent the pinnacle of football.

The individual in question? Gary Lineker.

Ex-England international Lineker spent three years plying his club trade in Spain, on the books of Barcelona between 1986 and 1989.

The now-presenter also lined out for a trio of Premier League clubs, in the form of Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Having also been covering English football in the media for several decades now, it is therefore safe to say that Lineker is in a good position to speak on the long-standing debate between Premier League and La Liga football.

And, during podcast ‘The Rest Is Football’ this week, this is precisely what the 64-year-old did.

Revealing his take that the very best in the game still head to one of Spain’s top two, Lineker explained:

“Playing for either Barcelona or Real Madrid is something truly special. However strong, powerful, and rich the Premier League is, the world’s greats still go to Barcelona and Real Madrid. The only exception in recent times would be Haaland.”
