Wayne Rooney claimed both the Arsenal players and the supporters at the Emirates “weren’t good enough” in their 1-0 defeat to PSG.
Ousmane Dembele’s early goal proved enough to secure victory for the French champions in the Champions League semi-final first leg.
Both Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli were denied by good saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma but the Gunners will have to overturn a one-goal deficit at the Parc Des Princes if they are to reach the final of the competition.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, former Man Utd and Everton striker Wayne Rooney singled out the supporters as well as the team, however.
“I think for Arsenal, I was a bit disappointed with how they played, I was disappointed with the fans as well,” he said.
“I thought the fans against Real Madrid were excellent and really pushed the team.
“I thought tonight they were a bit subdued, almost like an anti-climax after Arsenal had beaten Real Madrid, that they were going to walk into the final and win the competition.
“The fans had to be there for them tonight. The players had to show up of course but I think on both sides it wasn’t good enough tonight from Arsenal.”
Rooney also believes Arsenal showed “fear” in their defeat to PSG, which he highlighted as something which must change in the second leg.
“There’s a fear over the last few years,” he said. “Psychologically, there’s a fear of just not getting over the line.
“They ran Manchester City close in the league, they’ve ran Liverpool a little bit close, now they are close in the Champions League.
“I think there’s a fear psychologically that they have to get over.
“You need to be successful as well to build. That’s the only way you can build, is being successful on that journey to get to the top and I just don’t think they’re making those steps.”
