Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay sparked a huge brawl in the second-leg of the final of the Campeonato Paulista between Corinthians and Palmeiras.
Depay’s Corinthians were ahead 1-0 in the tie after the first-leg, and managed to hold onto their lead in this game as the second-leg finished 0-0 and they were crowned champions.
But the game was overshadowed by the brawl that occurred in a fiery game which overall saw four red cards and 13 yellows handed out.
Towards the end of the game, to run down the clock, Depay received the ball and instead of taking it into the corner and holding it, he decided to stand on it with both feet.
The move was seen as a showboat of sorts, and the Palmeiras players did not respond well to it. Two of them crunched into Depay, resulting in him crashing to the ground.
What ensued can only be described as a massive bust-up between both teams. Almost every player on the pitch was involved and Corinthians midfielder Jose Martinez and Palmeiras goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba ended up being sent off.
The bust-up went on for several minutes, and the two players who were sent off were not even on the pitch when the incident occurred.
It could be argued Depay’s tactic worked, as the brawl only served to waste more time, and his side ended up winning the final.
The Dutchman joined the Brazilian side in September of 2024 from Atlético Madrid. He has an incredible resume of clubs he has played for since the start of his career, which includes PSV, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona, and the two aforementioned clubs.
And he has now helped to bring silverware to his current club with his performances in the final a key part of his side’s success.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Depay is that he is still only 31-years-old, and could be feasibly be playing for at least another four years.
