Former Real Madrid midfielder Alvaro Benito has issued a passionate reminder to those underestimating Los Blancos ahead of their highly anticipated Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

While Real Madrid’s season has been marked by inconsistency and questions surrounding their form, Benito insists the club’s pedigree and relentless spirit make them impossible to discount in a final of such magnitude.

“With this team, you always have to be optimistic. I always believe that when they go into a match, they will win it,” he said on Cadena SER (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Pressure on Real Madrid and Barcelona

The former midfielder underlined the immense pressure and significance of the fixture, describing it as a must-win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who are desperate to end the season on a high.

Despite Barcelona’s handful of shortcomings, Benito acknowledges the physical threat Hansi Flick’s side can pose but maintains that Madrid must bring their trademark aggression, intensity, and ruthlessness to the pitch.

“Barça, although they have slowed down a bit physically, have to face a team that’s aggressive.

“They have to run a lot and well, attack the back of the defence, and be a very effective team. Quality has to come out of Real Madrid, no matter what,” he noted.

Players need to step up

That quality, Benito believes, lies in the hands of Real Madrid’s electric front line, which will include Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, and their newest attacking weapon, Kylian Mbappe.

“The forwards must have a good day in generosity, effort, and precision up front. The quality of Mbappé, Vinicius, and Bellingham must emerge,” he said.

Lastly, Benito also praised Vinicius’s wish to renew his contract, calling him “one of the best players in the world” and highlighting his unique qualities.

With Mbappe now part of the squad, the former midfielder emphasised the importance of a strong connection between the two superstars:

“Their synergy on the pitch will be vital for the team. They have to make each other better and work for the collective success,” he concluded.
