Football fans! In a football stadium! In May 2020!

The dream is about to become reality in Hungary, after the government gave the OK to supporters this week. Sort of.

There are, of course, certain requirements before supporters can attend games. Namely, fans have to keep a distance of 1.5m to each other.

That means watching the game with two seats between individuals. As a result, only around one in four seats in stadiums can actually be used.

Maybe things will work a bit more smoothly in Denmark where, from Thursday night, football returns. And fans can be there while remaining at home.

Aarhus host local rivals Randers and giant television screens are being put in place in front of the stands.

Why? well, so fans can watch ‘from the stands’ via a Zoom video link. Obviously.

Fans have, free of charge, agreed to take part. They had the choice of where in the ‘stand’ to ‘sit’ and season ticket holders can be placed near their real-life neighbours at the stadium.

Those taking part will even be encouraged to try and chant in unison, which would supposedly reach the players on the pitch. Whether or not it works out well in practice remains to be seen.
