Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has explained the absences of both Michael Kayode and Fábio Carvalho in the Bees' matchday squad for the 1-0 loss against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

January addition Kayode has sustained a minor injury and could be back for next Saturday's Premier League trip to Bournemouth, while Fábio Carvalho has undergone surgery for a shoulder injury.

"Kayode has a minor injury," said Frank.

"He could be available for Bournemouth but we will have to wait and see.

"Unfortunately, Fábio has dislocated his shoulder. He had surgery on Wednesday."

On the defeat to Aston Villa, Frank added: “In many ways, it was an even game.

"The first half was very even, neither team could really break the deadlock and there were not many decisive moments.

“In the second half, they scored the goal with the deflection which helps. Other than that, we were completely on top in the game.

“We tried crosses into the box and created a lot of dangerous situations, but didn’t have the killer touch on the night. It was a game where I think we deserved much more than what we got."

Christian Nørgaard and Mathias Jensen returned from a concussion and adductor injury, respectively, in the loss to Villa, while Frank previously confirmed that Sepp van den Berg will return to training next week.

Rico Henry is back in full training, while Gustavo Nunes, Igor Thiago and Josh Dasilva are all running.
