L’Équipe reports that SC Freiburg are nearing the completion of a deal to purchase Troyes striker Cyriaque Irié. The 19-year-old Ivorian/Burkinabé striker would constitute a record purchase for the Bundesliga club. Negotiations over a deal costing between €12m-14m are reportedly underway.
At present, the most small-market Freiburg have ever shelled out for a player is €10m. French midfielder Baptiste Santamaria arrived in the Breisgau for that price in September 2020. The club ended up selling Santamaria for €14m 11 months later.
Currently in seventh place in the Bundesliga table, Freiburg maintain hopes of European football next season. Julian Schuster’s SCF are only three points removed from a Champions League spot.
Despite the fact that recent purchases of players such as Eren Dinkçi, Jan-Niklas Beste, and Patrick Osterhage leave Freiburg with a negative transfer balance, the expected sale of Japanese attacker Ritsu Doan could help replenish the club’s coffers.
Doan occupies second place on Freiburg’s all-time transfer list behind Santamaria. The Samurai international cost the Breisgauer €8.5m in the summer of 2022.
