AC Milan are approaching the deadline to extend the deals of Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan, and clarity is needed quickly.
In recent weeks, things have taken a turn for the better, and there is a feeling of vague optimism around Milan. A possible Coppa Italia win would mean European football next season, which is a must.
How did we get here, though?
Well, change finally occurred, with the Rossoneri finally testing a 3-4-3 system, which has seemingly been inevitable for months now (if not longer). Results have improved, barring the loss to Atalanta, and key players are performing better again.
The big case of this is Theo Hernandez, who looks reborn in a new role – powered by the gift of defensive freedom, or at least slightly by this idea. As Gazzetta dello Sport write, he may not be reborn just yet, but he may is heading that way.
So, a renewal could be back on the table. However, his demands would need to be downscaled, and his form (and behaviour) would have to continue to improve, as it has of late. A renewal would be a risk, but it could be worth taking; it is a case of balance.
Then, there is the case of Maignan, who has also been helped by this change in system, as the Diavolo have only conceded once in 360 minutes.
The chances of his renewal are much greater, given the offer remains on the table with only a signature required. A deal was effectively agreed prior to now, as Gazzetta writes, but the parties wanted to wait for the ‘right time’. Now feels about right, it seems.
