A goalkeeper in Spain’s third tier has been hit with a suspension after confronting fans who racially abused him.

Rayo Majadahonda’s Cheikh Sarr was sent off for his reaction during last weekend’s Primera Federación game at Sestao River with the hosts leading 2-1.

The Senegalese’s teammates all walked off the pitch in solidarity following the incident, leading to the game being abandoned in the 84th minute.

Sarr explained on Tuesday his reason for taking the abusive fans to task during the flashpoint at Las Llanas, in the Basque region.

“I grabbed him and asked why he was insulting me. My attitude was not aggressive, I just wanted to ask him why,” he said.

“Other times it could be seen as something playful or a joke. However, this was not the case on Saturday, as it was something horrible and I could not stop myself.

“It was a very sad and ugly thing what they were saying.”

But the 23-year-old has now received a two-match ban as part of disciplinary sanctions by Spanish football’s governing body, the RFEF.

Rayo were also deducted three points and handed a 3-0 defeat for the game due to their walk-off while also receiving a fine of €3,006.

Sestao have seen a €6,001 fine imposed in addition to their next two homes being played behind closed doors due to the incident.
