Habib Beye took over a Stade Rennais side in freefall at the end of January, replacing Jorge Sampaoli with the club under real threat of relegation.
Beye signed a deal until the end of the Ligue 1 season with the option to extend, in the event that certain conditions were fulfilled. Les Rennais have pulled away from the relegation scrap and a comfortable mid-table finish is now highly likely with too few games to go to allow the Breton side to launch a challenge for the European places.
The conditions to renew included keeping Rennes in Ligue 1, which is now almost certain, even if not mathematically guaranteed. However, questioned about his future at the club, Beye was vague, stating that he was not yet in a position to discuss his future at the club with his superiors. “We will see on 18th May,” he said on Wednesday. That date corresponds with the day after the end of the season.
Beye’s intention, however, seems to be to remain with Rennes. “I am at an exceptional club,” said the former Red Star manager. For now, the focus of everyone at the club is to finish a difficult season on a high.
