Although he has not been able to play a lot this season, the German goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen is still the longest-serving player in this FC Barcelona squad.

He has been living in the Catalan city for more than a decade now and has been quite well integrated into this community. The latest indication of this was him getting the International Gentleman Award given to him by the Spanish Luxury Association, for being a successful athlete and for having an extensive career as an elite athlete.

As SPORT has reported, the German also talked to the media on this occasion. He is the only player in this Blaugrana squad who won the treble with Barcelona in 2015 and was asked to explain whether winning all the trophies feels the same while fully participating in a campaign and while seeing his team win from the outside.

To this question, the goalkeeper replied:

“Back then we had a completely different team, it was a team built to win. A lot has changed in recent years, but we’re performing very well. We have only a few games left. I, like any other fan, hope we win the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, and in La Liga, keep the momentum going, just like in the Champions League.”

Ter Stegen also opened up on his relationship with Wojciech Szczesny:

“He’s performing very well, he has personality and experience. As a person, he helps the younger players a lot on a daily basis. We get along really well, even before he signed with Barça. We’re at a very good level, he brings a lot of calm, and hopefully he keeps it up.”

The Barcelona captain still did not rule out his return to the pitch this season:

“We’re not in a position right now to talk about those things, I just hope the team keeps going in the same direction and we can reach the semifinals. There are only a few games left in a short amount of time. We all hope for a lot of success.

Now it’s about finishing recovery and getting back into the group dynamic. It all comes down to how I feel — if I’m good, I’ll talk to him [Flick] and we’ll decide what’s best for everyone.”

The German veteran also had some advice for his team:

“The best advice I can give them is to win tomorrow and keep the streak going. If we can continue like this, it will be easier for us in the Champions League.”

With the way Szczesny has been playing, Ter Stegen is not being missed a lot in the team. Still, his return will be a significant boost to the Barcelona team, keeping in view his status as a captain and a respected veteran, and hopefully, he will be able to make his return as soon as possible.
