After a pulsating Newcastle 3 Liverpool 3 at Gallowgate against Premier League runaway leaders Liverpool, I’m not going to dwell on officials’ decisions and what might have beens.
That would only detract from what was a sterling performance by a more cohesive and confident looking United.
Eddie Howe and the team should be commended for taking the game to the Reds, during periods where we became slightly reminiscent of the team that captivated all our hearts little more than 18 months ago.
What can I say about the Rolls Royce Alexander Isak’s opening goal in this thrilling encounter?
It was the sort of explosive strike from outside of the box that reminded me of some of our former Toon number 9s.
Supermac, Cole, Shearer, Martins and Cisse, were the five players I have seen in the last 50 years plus, who were capable of doing what Isak did last night.
Simply bursting the net from distance with a clean and accurate effort, struck before a goalkeeper can even position himself.
I was proud of the whole team.
My brother called me whilst leaving St James’ Park and I could tell he was brimming with excitement after the pulsating spectacle he had just witnessed in the flesh.
I have to admit that my confidence started growing that we would get something from the game on Wednesday morning. I had said earlier in the week that I thought this game was a free hit, so to speak.
We can now only hope that Eddie and the Hotrods can finally gain proper momentum, take everything that was good about this performance into our next game against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
I think it’s appropriate that I give a shout out to Liverpool’s Mo Salah. He didn’t have a particular great game by his high standards but still managed two goals and an assist.
As me and my brother later concurred, how this man has never won the Ballon d’Or, is surely now a modern day injustice.
