Valencia pulled off one of the shocks of the La Liga season by beating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu—a result that marked their first away win of the campaign.
It was not just any win either. It ended a 17-year wait for a victory at one of Spain’s most iconic stadiums and gave the team a massive confidence boost heading into the final stretch of the season.
The victory was built on resilience, discipline, and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Georgian shot-stopper was the standout figure on the pitch, pulling off a string of remarkable saves, including a crucial penalty stop against Vinicius Jr. in the 12th minute when the score was still 0-0.
That moment was a turning point, as it kept Valencia level and allowed them to grow into the game.
In the second half, Mamardashvili continued to frustrate Real Madrid with brilliant saves against Federico Valverde, Lucas Vazquez, and Antonio Rudiger.
Each intervention added pressure on the home side and gave Valencia the belief they needed to push for a famous win. Hugo Duro’s goal eventually sealed the deal and sent the visiting supporters into celebration.
Speaking after the match, Mamardashvili admitted even he was surprised by one of his saves—particularly the one that denied Valverde. The keeper revealed he was in shock, not expecting to get a hand to the powerful strike.
“I didn’t even expect to save it. I was in shock,” he said.
He called it his best performance so far in a Valencia shirt, though he also noted there were still eight games to go in the league.
“It’s my best game so far, but there are still eight games left,” he added.
He added that this performance might well go down as one of his final big displays in La Liga.
“It’s a historic match, it’s been a long time, and we’re leaving here with a great feeling,” he explained.
