Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi admits that losing the Supercoppa Italiana to AC Milan “burns.”
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, after the match. He was nevertheless defiant, saying that Inter will “get back up.”
Inter have lost the Milan derby for the second time this season.
After a sequence of six consecutive victories in the fixture, the Nerazzurri have now lost both clashes with city rivals against AC Milan so far this season.
While the first defeat came in Serie A, this time around it was the Supercoppa Italiana.
That means that Inter have failed to win silverware at the first attempt for the campaign.
Moreover, the Nerazzurri have lost the Supercoppa final for the first time in the last four seasons.
And the fact that Inter had been 2-0 up shortly after the start of the second half makes it all the more difficult to process this defeat.
After the match, Inter coach Inzaghi said that “We have to congratulate Milan, who never gave up.”
“And clearly, on the free kick that made it 2-1, we gave up a ball that we should have controlled.”
“Then we could have gone 3-1 up,” noted Inzaghi. “But Maignan did very well on the sots from Carlos and Dumfries.
“It’s a loss that burns,” Inzaghi admitted. “But this team will recover, as it has done over the last three and a half years.”
“But we’ll have to get back to our best quickly,” the Inter coach added.
Of Inter’s late collapse, Inzaghi said that “I don’t think it’s just about Inter, but all teams.”
“When the fatigue hits and the intensity drops.”
“At the moment, I have to applaud the defense,” Inzaghi said. “Because we don’t have many players available, and the same ones are always having to play.”
Then Inzaghi added that “For the free kick that made it 2-1, there was probably a foul on Asllani.”
“But we should have managed the game better,” admitted the Inter coach.
“We go home very disappointed,” Inzaghi said. “We gave everything, but at 2-0 up we should have managed the game better.”
Of the thigh problems for Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu, Inzaghi said that “They’re certainly very important players for us.”
“In football, sometimes players are essential. But we can’t let that be the case for us.”
“Now we’re waiting for the defenders to return from injury,” Inzaghi added. “They will be able to give us a hand.”
“All teams are playing a lot, and we need to be able to rotate so we don’t lose players.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi spoke about defender Alessandro Bastoni. The 25-year-old appeared to take a heavy blow to the face while blocking a shot with his head during the second half.
“He said he’d taken a blow to the face,” said the Inter coach of Bastoni.
“He had some problems in the first five minutes after that.”
“And then at the same time, de Vrij told me that he had a thigh flexor problem. At that moment, de Vrij seemed more ready to see out the match than de Vrij.”
