Inter Milan have, for the time being at least, extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table.

The Nerazzurri knew full well how important it would be not to drop points against Udinese on their return from the international break.

And Inter were also certainly aware of how tough their task was going to be. Udinese have shown that they can get results and put in performances against top teams, including Inter.

In the first half, there was little evidence of that, however. Inter completely overran Udinese, particularly in midfield, creating multiple chances and conceding little defensively.

But in the second half, the Friulani grew into the match and showed why they can be so tough to play against.

A screamer out of nothing from defender Oumar Solet completely changed the dynamic of the match.

And from then on, Inter were hanging on for dear life as Udinese played with a renewed confidence and pushed for the equalizer.

Inter did hang on, however. Partly thanks to a couple brilliant saves from keeper Yann Sommer.

Therefore, the two goals from Marko Arnautovic and Davide Frattesi that crowned the Nerazzurri’s nearly flawless first half were enough to give them the three points that they need in the title race.

Striker Arnautovic, the scorer of Inter’s first goal, commented after the match that “we have to just look at ourselves.”

“We can’t do anything about the other teams,” he added.

Inter’s main Serie A title rivals Napoli are in action later today. They face AC Milan in a hugely important match.

Arnautovic then added that “we have to win the last eight matches, and then we’ll see what happens.”

The 35-year-old added that “the team is feeling the pressure of the moment.”
