Simone Inzaghi reveals why Marcus Thuram went to celebrate with him after Inter beat Parma 3-1 and thanks ‘extraordinary’ Nicolò Barella.

The Nerazzurri made relatively short work of Parma at San Siro, even though the first goal didn’t arrive until the 40th minute with a sensational bit of individual skill from Federico Dimarco.

That was assisted by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who also sent Nicolò Barella clear for 2-0 before Marcus Thuram turned in at the back post on a corner.

Parma got a consolation with the late Matteo Darmian own goal for the final 3-1 result.

“I had told Thuram to go into that position at the back post on set plays,” revealed Inzaghi on DAZN.

“The lads did well, as Parma had only lost to Napoli recently, so I am very satisfied with the performance.”

Mkhitaryan provided two assists and is on sparkling form, but Lautaro Martinez missed a couple of sitters.

“Those were two excellent goals, but Lautaro has to continue like this, because he worked so hard and at the 90th minute he tracked back to defend like a real captain. The only regret is that we conceded a goal, because the team deserved the clean sheet.

“Darmian was angry, it’s only natural, but he was probably the least culpable in that situation. The error was much earlier in the move,” added Inzaghi.

Barella had not scored for a couple of months, so him finding the net with such a well-worked move must be a confidence-booster for the Italy international.

“He is extraordinary and I thought last season was his best under me, even if he actually contributed fewer goals and assists overall.”

Inter are on track to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 and were paired with River Plate, Monterrey and Urawa Red Diamonds in the 2025 Club World Cup.

“We will try to do our best, but to be honest I think Inter have already achieved so much in the last three and a half years,” noted Inzaghi when asked if he dreamed of lifting that trophy.

“The club hadn’t reached the Champions League last 16 for 10 years, now being at the Club World Cup is satisfying for everyone. It shows how well we have done in this time.”
