Phil Foden’s underwhelming performances for England have drawn plenty of attention and two former England internationals have now offered their views on Man City’s star.
Thomas Tuchel started Foden in his first game in charge of England. Although after an underwhelming display, the German admitted: “Phil is just maybe not finding the momentum at the moment that he can have.
“Phil needs maybe a little bit closer connections to a No 10 than we could provide in this match.”
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have now weighed in on the issue and the duo did not agree about Foden, when discussing the attacking midfielder’s England position on ‘Stick to Football’.
Carragher declared: “He has played every position for England, he has not done it. We all love him, he is amazing for Man City but he has not done it for England.
“He was in the England team before Saka, he was in the England team before Bellingham. Those two grabbed their chance and took it, and there is no way they are getting left out.
The former Liverpool defender continued: “He has not done enough in an England shirt better than Saka to play there. He has not done more than Bellingham in an England shirt to play there.
“So everyone says ‘Why are they playing Phil Foden on the left?’, they are playing him there because they are trying to get him in somewhere.
“I do think Phil Foden seems like a shy lad.” Carragher explained. “I don’t think he has that arrogance on the pitch for England that I see Bellingham have, and I think that holds him back a little bit.”
Neville defended the current Premier League Player of the Year from his colleague’s criticism. He argued: “‘Where do you play him?’ Only English people ask that about these players.”
The former Man United captain continued: “What happens with players like Phil Foden is because they are more flexible and a bit more versatile. Because Bellingham has to play where he plays… he does get moved around.
“You will play him number ten, then left-wing, then right-wing. You will move him around, it happens with players like that.”
Carragher retorted: “He is lucky that they are moving him around but Neville insisted: “I think that if you play with three in midfield, you could play with Foden and Bellingham.
“It is the age-old thing with England, some players have to be on form to play. Other players will get played irrespective of their club form. Foden should be that player for me.
Neville maintained: “City are a lot better than England by the way, let’s be clear. For him to get in that City team as he does is an absolute feat in itself because of how good they have been.
“For England, in my opinion, he is level with Bellingham, that is where I see him.”
