Is the writing on the wall for one Manchester City player?

Article image:Is the writing on the wall for one Manchester City player?

One player who hasn’t played in Manchester City’s past three games is Jack Grealish. The England international has been an unused substitute in City’s games against Chelsea, Club Brugge and Arsenal. You do begin to get the sense that perhaps the writing is on the wall for the Manchester City career of Jack Grealish.

The 24/25 season has been another frustrating campaign for Jack Grealish. After not being selected in the England squad for last summer’s European Championships there was hope that the disappointment Grealish suffered could bring out his best this season. But that hasn’t been the case. Injuries and a loss of form have conspired against the England international. As it stands currently it’s hard to see where Jack Grealish stands in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

The simple conclusion to draw right now is that he doesn’t stand anywhere currently other than on the bench. Especially when you consider who has been playing ahead of him on the left wing and the type of players that they are. Savinho and Jeremy Doku are completely different types of wingers to Grealish. The pair are quick and direct and have a different skill set to that of Grealish. Both have also been in form, although Doku is currently injured. Omar Marmoush is now added to the equation and you do struggle to see where Grealish will fit into the Manchester City starting eleven.

It also appears that the experiment of playing Grealish in midfield is over. Perhaps Pep Guardiola may revisit it, but if he isn’t going to when his team has been consistently overrun in midfield, you do sense that Grealish won’t become a midfielder for Manchester City.

We saw during Manchester City’s 4-2 loss to PSG that Grealish can still contribute. He scored on that particular night and also helped set up Erling Haaland’s goal. But since then he hasn’t featured. You do get the sense the writing is on the wall in regards to Grealish’s career at Manchester City. If he wants to be a part of City’s rebuild it’s on him to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans. That is dependent on if a decision hasn’t already been made on Grealish’s future by the City hierarchy.
