Bayern Munich finished the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign 18 points behind maiden champions Bayer Leverkusen, the first time Serge Gnabry hadn’t won a league title since his move to the Rekordmeister in 2017. Speaking exclusively to Bundesliga.com, the 29-year-old discussed his motivation to avoid the situation again.

“For sure, it gives you an extra edge of motivation,” said Gnabry. “I’ve also got to say it felt strange not winning something, since we got used to it so much. Which is a crazy thing to say, but that’s how it was. Of course, a lot of disappointment, but you take that little bit more of an edge for wanting to win again. Because it does feel good to win. At a club like Bayern Munich, you want to win, have to win, so that’s what we focus on.”

Eight points separate Bundesliga holders Bayer Leverkusen and leaders Bayern Munich heading into the 22nd matchday. After their game against Celtic in Glasgow, Gnabry and Co. will then travel to Leverkusen where they face Xabi Alonso’s side, who have a week to prepare for the clash against the Rekordmeister after securing knockout Champions League football.

Gnabry started the campaign well with two goals and two assists in his opening four Bundesliga games, but didn’t register another goal contribution until matchday 17. The former Arsenal attacker has scored four and created two in 14 league games under Vincent Kompany this season.
