In yesterday's Southampton Vs Liverpool matchday, the most talked of thing was a penalty call. And why wouldn't it be? After all, it was this decision that snatched a result from the Saints.
Yesterday was another day in English football where the refereeing decisions, rather than the match outcome, stole the spotlight. Strangely, for the first time in a while, it was Southampton at cost.
Admit it or not, if there's one thing going in the Saints' favor this season, it is referee calls. But, now, they have been called out of this luck as well.
So, in the recent Southampton Vs Liverpool game, the Saints stood at a draw with the Reds at a point. Though it hadn't been easy going for the Saints, the hopes of a result were all over the fans.
Sadly, it didn't remain that way long. And what influenced the result? A controversial penalty call against the Saints.
In the 53rd minute, a mild intervention from Will Smallbone brought Reds forward Nunez to the ground. Result? A penalty to Liverpool, through which Salah made it 2-1 for the hosts.
Nevertheless, as was expected, boss Ivan Juric looked upset with the call, which was crucial to the 3-1 final scoreline.
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Juric said: "I have to say I am a little bit disappointed. I don't know about the other decisions, but with the first penalty. It was too soft a contact for it to be a penalty in England."
Now, definitely, this single call turned the fixture's momentum towards Liverpool, against the Saints. Still, one has to admit, that it had to happen one day after a string of decisions in their favor.
However, the regret remains just that it worked against Southampton when they needed it the most.
Let's hope they don't have to end up on the receiving end of more such calls in the future.
