Key away win in play-off first leg

2-0 success against Dynamo Kyiv

We will start our UEFA Champions League play-off second leg on Thursday 27 August in Salzburg with a two-goal lead! Pep Lijnders' charges took a massive 2-0 away win against FC Dynamo Kyiv at the Arena Lublin in Poland thanks to goals from Dorgeles Nene and Maurits Kjaergaard.

Our Red Bulls cut a good figure right from the word go, pressing the hosts back in their own half. Only the odd misplaced pass or two put Dynamo Kyiv into the encounter. There was a lack of chances to begin with as both sides lacked the clinical touch in the opposing box - with the torrential rain no doubt a factor in that.

Things can suddenly change in a game of football though, as our opening goal demonstrated beautifully. Shovkovskyi's side were threatening us when Moussa Yeo worked wonders in midfield and threaded the ball through to Dorgeles Nene. His fellow man from Mali kept the upper hand against Dynamo goalkeeper Bushchan and tidied in on his first touch to make it 1-0 (29').

Other than that, the first half was devoid of highlights, with both us and the Ukrainians able to threaten at times.

The second half got off to a flying start as Kyiv defender Karavaiev fouled Yeo and referee Sandro Schärer pointed to the penalty spot. As was the case at Twente, Maurits Kjaergaard (50') took responsibility and converted calmly!

Despite our two-goal lead, the hosts were in no mood to give up, and almost grabbed a goal back immediately. Dynamo's experienced attacking hand, Andriy Yarmolenko (51'), hammered over from short-range, as our defence was alerted to the danger.

There was no doubt Dynamo were a step up from FC Twente in terms of playing quality, but we were able to hold our own fantastically. After making a few changes - one that saw a competitive debut for Oliver Lukic – our charges raced forward once more under the guidance of Pepijn Lijnders. Both sides had big chances for a goal in the final minutes with a Kyiv corner seeing the ball headed into our post before Nicolas Capaldo smashed the side netting. Despite both sides seeing some big chances, it remained 2-0 to our boys.

It's only half-time in the tie, and we need to unwind a bit as that match had everything! Moments in which we were incredible on the ball and sensational off the ball. Also moments when we didn't find the right time to press and lost balls. I am pleased about the result though and about the performance of the boys!

Pepijn Lijnders

It was a good match from us! We played well, scored two goals and didn't concede any. We are happy, even if we have to remain focused as there is another match to come. It was special for me that around 20 people from my family were here. We want to make the Champions League, and we can hardly wait for the second leg!

Kamil Piatkowski

It's a good result for us, even if it was a difficult match. We had good chances, and we used them. Things were dangerous at the back at times, and we need to improve that and prepare for the second leg, as it won't be easy at home.

Amar Dedic

It wasn't so easy, of course. Dynamo are good opponents, but we remained calm and got into our usual game. You can see that we used the spaces well, and we were very mature after scoring the opener. We aren't sure of anything yet, as we still have one match we need to be ready for and give our all in!
