Rebecca Knaak made her senior Germany debut in Friday’s Nations League fixture with the Netherlands.
The defender was selected in Christian Wuck’s starting XI at Rat Verlegh Stadion as they drew 2-2.
She was up against some familiar faces, with Kerstin Casparij, Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord all in the Netherlands side.
It’s been a memorable journey to senior international football for Knaak who represented Germany at every youth team level up until 2016.
The 28-year-old made 10 appearances for and captained the Under-20s on occasion and was also a member of the U20 squad who won the 2014 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
At the triumphant tournament, she played all six matches – including the first half of the final success over Nigeria where Germany won 1-0.
However, despite domestic success for Bayer Leverkusen, SC Freiburg and Rosengard before her City switch, she remained uncapped at senior level until the latest international break.
Knaak became Gareth Taylor’s first January signing this year when penning a contract that will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027.
Since then, she has hugely impressed at the heart of our defence across her eight appearances so far in all competitions which earned her a nomination for January’s Etihad Player of the Month.
The centre-back netted in our narrow Barclays Women’s Super League defeat to Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium and registered an assist on her debut when providing Jill Roord’s strike in our 3-1 FA Cup win over Ipswich.
And her memorable campaign continued as she represented her country at senior level for the first time.
Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Rebecca on making her Germany debut!
