AS Monaco lost 2-0 to Stade Rennais after a tepid performance on Saturday night, much to the frustration of Krépin Diatta (24). Les Monégasques have fallen to sixth place and are now out of the qualifying spots for European competition.
Philippe Clement’s side have lost four of their last six league games, crumbling at the worst possible moment. The Senegalese forward, who played under the Belgian coach at Club Brugge, was the only Monaco player who spoke out yesterday in the mixed zone at Roazhon Park.
The 24-year-old did not conceal his frustration. “It’s normal to feel shame. Otherwise, it means you’re not fit to wear the Monaco jersey“, Diatta said in an interview, transcribed by L’Equipe. After the final whistle, the Monaco ultras requested to talk to the players, who duly obliged. “Their reaction is normal, nothing more. They are absolutely right. They deserve better.” The Monaco winger then claimed that his teammates are the makers of their own misfortune because they are not playing as a team anymore. “In our last six games, we can’t say that everyone is pulling in the same direction. We could even finish seventh! At least against Rennes, it was a bit better; it’s not like at Lyon where we gave up.”
Monaco face Toulouse in the final game of the season and may not qualify for any European competition, which would be a disaster for Les Monégasques. “It would be more than a failure“, added Diatta.
