Ivan Provedel reportedly realises his Lazio stint could come to an end in the summer after losing his starting berth.

The Background

The 30-year-old cemented himself as the club’s first-choice between the posts after making the move from Spezia in the summer of 2022. But after two impressive campaigns in the Italian capital, the custodian has encountered difficulties this season. Marco Baroni repeatedly defended the Italy international, but the latter’s costly blunders against Napoli proved to be the last straw.

Therefore, the manager dropped Provedel against Venezia last weekend in favor of the younger Christos Mandas who was also between the sticks in the Coppa Italia tie with Inter Milan. The Greek is also expected to get the nod this Sunday for the big Serie A showdown against AC Milan.

Lazio Pondering Ivan Provedel Sale

So according to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Provedel is already reading the writing on the wall. He believes the choice to bench him might not be purely technical, but also strategic, with the club choosing to focus on a younger goalkeeper for the future.

Nevertheless, the source still expects the Pordenone native to fight for his place between now and the end of the season and try to win back the favor of Baroni as well as the hierarchy.

Maurizio Sarri to the Rescue?

But if the experienced goalkeeper were to fail in this mission, the newspaper believes his old boss Maurizio Sarri could offer him an escape rope. The former Lazio coach is taking a sabbatical after resigning from his post at Formello last March, but he’s expected to land himself a new role before the upcoming campaign.

The Italian tactician is currently being linked with several top clubs, including the Serie A trio Atalanta, Fiorentina and Milan as well as Tottenham Hotspur.
