Lecce have announced that they expect their Serie A match against Atalanta, scheduled for Friday evening, will be postponed following the tragic and shock death of the team’s long-standing physiotherapist, Graziano Fiorita.
Lecce announced on Thursday that Fiorita, a first-team physiotherapist who had been with the club for over 20 years, died suddenly during the training camp at Coccaglio.
As a result, the club will immediately return home, and have informed supporters that Friday night’s Serie A match ‘will be postponed’.
“U.S. Lecce is deeply upset to announce that Graziano Fiorita has suddenly passed away. The physiotherapist, who has been in the Giallorossi ranks for over 20 years, was with the first-team at the Coccaglio training camp,” a statement on the club website read.
“In this moment of deep pain and total disbelief, the club can only huddle around his wife, Azzurra, children Carolina, Davide, Nicolo and Riccardo, his mother Francesca and all members of his family.”
Several Serie A matches have been postponed over the last few days, initially as a result of the death of Pope Francis, and then for his funeral, which will take place on Saturday.
For that reason, there will be no top-flight matches in Italy on Saturday, but six on Sunday and three on Monday instead. It remains to be seen when the Atalanta-Lecce match will be carried out.
