Liverpool bowed out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion, falling 4-1 on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain after a frantic last-16 second-leg bout at Anfield.
The French champions had never won a European shoot-out before Tuesday night, but they held their nerve to book a spot in the quarter-finals, overturning a 1-0 aggregate deficit in the process.
Arne Slot’s side picked up a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg in Paris, but they failed to build on that result as a 12th-minute strike from Ousmane Dembele drew the French champions back into the mix.
Dembele’s early strike was enough to force extra time and eventually penalties, where Gianluigi Donnarumma emerged as the hero.
The Italian goalkeeper kept out Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones to earn PSG a 4-1 win, with Desire Doue smashing home the decisive spot kick.
Alisson (8/10) – Another spectacular big-game performance from the Brazilian. Did well to smother Bradley Barcola and Dembele. Kept Liverpool in the game.
Andrew Robertson (6/10) – Got down the left flank well and was solid defensively. Put in several dangerous crosses and created a big chance in the second half.
Virgil van Dijk (7/10) – Dominant in the air. Was adept at reading and cutting out danger. Came close to giving Liverpool the lead early on.
Ibrahima Konate (6/10) – Should have done better to prevent PSG’s opener. Did his best to atone for his error and was otherwise astute in defence.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10) – Caught in no man’s land one too many times but looked dangerous on the ball. Had his handful dealing with Kvaratshkelia. Picked up a worrying knock in the second half.
Alexis Mac Allister (8/10) – Caught out once or twice but helped Liverpool establish a foothold in midfield. He was spectacular in midfield considering he had no help from Gravenberch.
Ryan Gravenberch (4/10) – A largely anonymous performance from the Dutchman. Struggled to get a grip on Vitinha and Joao Neves in midfield.
Luis Diaz (6/10) – Lively on the left flank but lacked end product. Forced a big save from Gianluigi Donarumma in the second half.
Dominik Szoboszlai (5/10) – His energy came in handy, but he largely struggled to affect the game in the final third.
Mohamed Salah (5/10) – Struggled to get out of Nuno Mendes’ back pocket for the second game in a row.
Diogo Jota (4/10) – Largely anonymous and hardly influenced the game. Should have done better with his headed effort in the first half.
Darwin Nunez (4/10)
Jarell Quansah (6/10) – Came agonisingly close to being the hero for Liverpool, but his well-timed header could only find the left post.
Curtis Jones (4/10)
