The second Merseyside derby of the season occurs at Anfield tonight as Liverpool and Everton battle it out once again.

Liverpool are edging closer to their second Premier League title, although they are now only nine points clear after Arsenal beat Fulham last night.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will continue to miss out, while Conor Bradley will be assessed. The Northern Irishman is the natural replacement for Liverpool’s vice-captain, but Arne Slot is taking a cautious approach to his reinstatement in the team. Bradley has been hampered all season by a repetitive hamstring issue.

Ryan Gravenberch and Alisson have been cleared to play despite their minutes on international duty being restricted by fitness concerns.

Everton are unbeaten in six games heading in tonight’s encounter with their fierce rivals.

The Toffees options in attack are still fairly limited with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye expected to be unavailable. However, the latter two are back in training and their returns are imminent.

Vitalii Mykolenko sustained a minor thigh injury while representing Ukraine and a decision will be made on his involvement.

Liverpool: WWWLL

Hopes of a treble were dashed before the international break as Liverpool exited two competitions in the same week.

First, they wilted under the pressure of a penalty shootout at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. A few days later, a lethargic display allowed Newcastle United to prevail in the Carabao Cup final.

Arne Slot and his players can now solely focus on securing the Premier League title. A victory tonight would restore their 12-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table. Any other result could create an element of doubt over a title that looked inevitable a month ago.

Everton: WDDDD

Everton are proving tremendously difficult to conquer under the stewardship of David Moyes.

In fact, since the Scotsman returned to Goodison Park, the Toffees have only lost twice in 11 matches.

Their last four games have all ended as stalemates and the blue half of Merseyside will be hoping to disrupt Liverpool’s quest for the title tonight.

Moyes announced in his pre-match press conference that he is desperate to end his notoriously poor record at Anfield. In a long and illustrious managerial career, the 61-year-old has never managed to win at the ground.

Last Meeting: Everton 2-2 Liverpool, Premier League, 12th February 2025

The last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park certainly rose to the occasion and will live long in the memory of every Everton supporter.

The hosts struck first blood through Beto in the 11th minute. A quick free-kick from Jarrad Branthwaite caught out a sleeping Liverpool defence and the striker calmly slotted past Alisson to give David Moyes’ side the lead.

It took only five minutes for the Reds to restore parity as Alexis Mac Allister deftly headed in Mohamed Salah’s cross.

Midway through the second period, the man Liverpool fans hail as the ‘Egyptian King’ completed the turnaround. Curtis Jones’ close-range effort was valiantly blocked by Branthwaite but only into the path of Salah. The leader in the race for the Golden Boot controlled the loose ball before firing into the net.

Jordan Pickford was then at full stretch to deny Liverpool’s number 11 a second from a curling shot.

However, the Goodison faithful still believed. And in the eighth minute of stoppage time, the unthinkable happened. A hopeful cross into the area wasn’t dealt with by Liverpool and the ball bounced towards the back post. From out of nowhere, Everton skipper James Tarkowksi venomously volleyed an unstoppable strike past Alisson to send the Gwladys Street End into pandemonium.

A mass brawl ensued after the full-time whistle and one player from each side was given their marching orders. Jones was incensed as Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated in front of the travelling fans and the resulting confrontation saw both individuals receive a second yellow card.

Amidst the fracas, Slot was also sent off for remonstrating in the direction of referee Michael Oliver. An apt finale to an era spanning decades.
