Luton Town may already be thinking ahead to the January transfer window.
Luton Town have been disappointing so far this season, but the upcoming January transfer window will give them an opportunity to strengthen their squad ahead of the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.
In August, the Hatters would no doubt have been hoping to challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League this season, having finished 18th in the top flight last term, although they currently find themselves in the bottom half of the Championship table.
Luton brought in several new players to be part of the squad that was tasked with mounting a promotion push in the second tier, including Premier League winner Victor Moses, former Arsenal defender Reuell Walters, and Mark McGuinness from Cardiff City in a deal worth up to £10 million.
However, Rob Edwards' side has not lived up to expectations so far, with a few comprehensive defeats against the likes of Burnley, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, as well as some poor results against teams towards the bottom of the division, such as Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End.
Edwards will be hoping to see the Hatters climb the table during the busy schedule that lies ahead in the lead-up to January, but he may already be casting an eye towards the upcoming transfer window and thinking about ways in which he can bolster his squad.
With that in mind, let's take a look at a couple of players that Luton could consider scouting ahead of the January transfer window.
Amid the construction of their new stadium and the fact that they spent a reasonable amount of money on new signings during the summer, Luton may consider entering the loan market rather than spending big in January.
The addition of enthusiastic young players may also give the squad a much-needed lift, with some extra energy as well as quality unlikely to do the team any harm during the second half of the season.
One player that could improve Luton is Tottenham Hotspur striker Will Lankshear. The 19-year-old was prolific for the under-21s last season, scoring 25 goals in 26 appearances, and has been in and around the first-team squad so far this term.
He has been named on the bench in the Premier League on a few occasions this season, including at Old Trafford and the Etihad, and he has also featured in the Europa League, with his goal against Galatasaray standing out as the highlight of his senior career to date.
The teenager was linked with a loan move to Middlesbrough in the summer, but that deal never materialised, and now that Boro are performing well and certainly not struggling for goals in the Championship, Luton could stake a claim to bring him to Kenilworth Road on a temporary basis.
Ahead of their game against Norwich City this weekend, the Hatters rank 16th for most goals per match in the Championship, yet, perhaps surprisingly, they are fifth in the table for big chances missed and seventh for touches in the opposition box.
Therefore, a natural goalscorer like Lankshear could be just the sort of player they need to make the most of their opportunities in the final third.
Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is another promising player that could improve Luton's team if he was brought to the club on loan.
The 22-year-old has been trusted by Arne Slot to play against Premier League opposition twice already this season, having featured in the Reds' EFL Cup triumphs over West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, those have been his only appearances in the first-team this season, so he could potentially be available to sign on loan in January, and Luton should consider joining the list of clubs that will no doubt be interested in his services if that does turn out to be the case.
Morton has impressed during loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City during the last two seasons, helping both clubs achieve seventh-place finishes in the Championship.
If Luton were able to sign Morton on loan in January, he would bring some energy, ability and desire that would be a welcome addition to the squad.
