Lyon have bowed out of the Coupe de France RO32 at the hands of fifth-tier side Bourgoin-Jallieu on penalties this Wednesday. Les Gones were overwhelming favorites to seal their qualification at Stade Pierre Rajon but the Coupe de France had an upset up its sleeve. Bourgoin striker Mehdi Moujetzky opened the scoring in the first half after some poor defending work from Pierre Sage’s men. Lyon restored parity through veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic before half-time. Just after the hour mark, Georges Mikautadze gave the visitors the lead.
Spurred on by their faithful fans at home, Bourgoin-Jallieu eventually forced Lyon into mistakes as Moujetzky went on to punish a terrible backpass from Rennes loanee Warmed Omari. Both teams tried to seal the win before full-time but penalties beckoned. Lyon chose to go with experience first with Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso, but both Lyon Academy graduates saw their rather tame attempts parried away by 23-year-old Bourgoin goalie Ronan Jay. Lyon would not be able to make up their deficit (4-2).
It is an embarrassing defeat for the Europa League-playing Lyon, whose quest for a first Coupe de France win since 2012 rumbles on.
