After news of his sacking was officially announced on Wednesday, former Almere City boss Hedwiges Maduro has responded via Instagram. Stating his disappointment at being let go after just six months with the rock-bottom Eredivisie side, the 39-year-old has still managed to see his dismissal as a learning experience.
“As a boy of the club and a boy of the city, it hurts me to have to leave this club. I gave everything and tried to help Almere City FC further. Unfortunately, this did not work out for explainable reasons.”
Maduro thanked the club for the opportunity to grow into an even better coach:
“Personally, I only think about growth. Wanting to become better. That’s why I see this as a snapshot. I will take this experience and the lessons I learned with me into the future.”
Maduro took charge back in July, having previously worked at the club as a youth coach and assistant manager of the first team between 2020-2023. Before returning to Almere, the 39-year-old was an assistant at Ajax during arguably one of the worst periods the Dutch giants have ever experienced. Almere’s last match with Maduro at the helm saw the side lose 3-0 away to the Amsterdam club.
While it is still unknown where Maduro’s future lies, he is determined to come back stronger, stating: “For now it is time to evaluate and especially for self-reflection. Again, I only think about growth. Fall 7 times, stand up 8!”
Almere will look for a successor during the winter break. In the meantime, assistant coaches Anoush Dastgir and Foeke Booy will take control for the last match of 2024 against sc Heerenveen.
