Yesterday we wrote a little about Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa after another wave of Chelsea links to the stopper emerged from the depths of the internet.
We made it very clear that, despite the fact Chelsea already have a number of goalkeepers on their books, including the promising young Mike Penders and the much improved Djordje Petrovic, they should 100% move for Costa if he comes onto the market.
It would be a huge mistake to fall into the sunk cost fallacy – sticking with Robert Sanchez has pretty much cost us Champions League football this season, and therefore was a total false economy. If Costa is available, we should go out there and get him.
Well, according to the latest news, reported today by FootMercato, not only is Costa on the market, he’s out there for a very reasonable price. They say Man City are closing in on the Portugal number one and are trying to secure him for just €40m.
We said they should sign him for €50m – so €40m is a no brainer. Sadly it seems our indecision has cost us once again however. Costa has apparently “already said yes” to City, and it’s hard to see us changing his mind now.
Porto are said to be holding out for the stopper’s €60m release clause, but knowing that he’s got just 2 years left on his contract, they’re likely to be forced to the table. The player’s desire to join City will also likely ramp up the pressure on the Portuguese club, now run by former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.
We really hope we’re not watching Costa lift the Premier League trophy a year from now while Sanchez is still wearing our number one shirt as we scrap for Champions League qualification once again.
