While captaining Manchester United at the Amex Stadium in front of a record-breaking crowd, Maya Le Tissier also broke a Barclays Women’s Super League record.
Le Tissier is officially the youngest player to reach 100 WSL appearances at 22 years of age. The record was previously set by England international teammate Lauren Hemp. But how did the young baller get to this achievement? Here’s a look at her impressive career so far.
Maya Le Tissier began her footballing journey at the age of four. She joined her local boys’ youth team and played with them for the following 12 years. Le Tissier grew up on the island of Guernsey, where there was no football youth teams for girls. Therefore, at the age of 13, she regularly flew to Hampshire for two years to play for her first all-girls football team.
After completing her GCSEs, Le Tissier joined Brighton and Hove Albion’s academy. It wasn’t long until her talent was noticed, earning her promotion into the first team. She was called upon as a substitute against Arsenal in November 2018. Less than a month later, the defender made her senior debut with her first start and a full 90 minute performance in the League Cup. This was only the start for the young Seagull, as just four days later, she went on to record her first WSL appearance and goal, scoring against Chelsea.
After 58 appearances and two consecutive Player of the Season awards, Le Tissier departed from Brighton. In July 2022, the defender joined Man United on a three-year contract. She made her debut for the Red Devils on the opening day of the 2022/23 WSL season, featuring against Reading and scoring two of their four goals.
Following a successful first two seasons with United, the Lioness signed a four-year contract extension. She helped her side lift their first major trophy last season when they triumphed in the FA Cup. United beat Chelsea in the semi-finals to set up a Wembley clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
Le Tissier’s strength and impact within the team has not gone unnoticed as she continues to stake her claim as one of the Reds’ key players. After former skipper Katie Zelem left the club during the summer, Le Tissier was given the armband and the responsibility to captain Manchester United.
The 22-year-old has led her side to an unbeaten start to the 2024/25 season so far. Man United currently sit third in the WSL table with 10 points from three wins and a draw. The Reds are just three points behind rivals Manchester City but they boast an important game in-hand over the league leaders, along with Chelsea.
A blockbuster challenge awaits Le Tissier and United in their next league clash — a home meeting with Arsenal, who have had a mixed start to their campaign.
